Most days, music fills the hallways of Deupree House. It's Jade Lin at the piano—practicing, playing, sharing. Not long ago, she wondered if her music days were over.
Before her move, Jade thought her music and dance had become memories. Now they're part of her everyday life. And what started as a decision to be closer to family became something none of them expected: a new chapter filled with purpose, connection, and the opportunity to do what she loves most.
A Wish That Changed Everything
For decades, Jade Lin lived in Boston. She told her son, Tony Lin, she'd never consider moving to Cincinnati. Then something shifted.
She was getting older. She felt lonely. And more than anything, she wanted to be near the people she loved.
So, she surprised Tony with a simple wish: she was ready for a change.
Tony got right to work. He called a realtor, started the process of selling the family home in Boston, and began searching for a community close to his Hyde Park home. He wanted his mom nearby—and he wanted her somewhere peaceful, welcoming, and well-suited to her needs.
He found Deupree House just eight minutes away.
What Made Deupree House Stand Out
Tony visited a few communities before helping his mom decide. But one visit felt different.
"We found the gold mine," he said. "It's the diamond."
For Tony, a few things stood out right away. Coming from a big city, he appreciated the calm, unhurried atmosphere. He liked the peaceful setting—the nearby golf course, the beautiful scenery, the sense that life here moved at a gentler pace. And more than anything, he felt it was the right place for his mom to settle in and call home.
"It has a calmer kind of atmosphere," he said. "I felt that would be a nice transition for her."
Once Jade settled in, she felt it too.
Making Room for the Things She Loved
Before her move, Jade had started to wonder if her days of performing and sharing her gifts were behind her. At Deupree House, she discovered they were just beginning.
Music isn’t just an activity for Jade—it’s part of who she is. She practices piano every day. No one complains. Instead, she's met with encouragement. She gives recitals for her neighbors, shares her dance choreography with fellow residents, and plays piano for art gallery openings.
"Before I moved here, I thought my music and dance would only be memories," she said. "Now I feel my life here is more meaningful."
But music is just one part of her days. Jade fills her calendar with things she loves, whether it’s Tai Chi, yoga, classes, movies, or of course, playing the piano.
"My life is very enriched," she said simply. At Deupree House, Jade has found opportunities to keep learning, creating, and sharing the things that bring her joy.
A Community That Welcomed Her as She Is
Jade arrived in Cincinnati knowing almost no one—just Tony and her daughter-in-law. She was starting over in a new city, in a new home, and in a language that wasn't her own.
But the people at Deupree House met her with warmth.
"The people here are so warm, so nice, so kind," she said. "Every time I go into a room or join an activity, it feels like a warm, big family."
That welcome shows up every day. A neighbor gives her English lessons once a week. When she needs help, someone is always nearby. Little by little, Jade found her footing—and then she found belonging.
"I thank God every day for bringing me here," she said.
The Peace of Mind Tony Didn't Know He Needed
Watching his mother thrive has brought Tony a peace of mind he didn't know he was missing.
He's noticed real changes. She's happier and more relaxed. And he has peace of mind knowing there are people around her who look out for her. There is a wellness nurse available, and residents can wear a pendant to call for help when they need it.
“It’s clear the staff truly care about my mom,” Tony said.
There's an emotional dimension too. Before the move, Tony and his wife flew to Boston a few times a year to see her. Now they see her every week. Some of those visits have turned into something neither of them planned: mother and son rehearsing violin and piano duets together, preparing for their next recital—just for fun.
"Home never sounded so good," Tony said with a smile.
A Place to Grow
When friends back in Boston ask about her new home, Jade doesn't hesitate.
She calls Deupree House "a small world within the world." A place where she can keep growing, stay active, and feel genuinely at home. A place where her gifts are welcomed and even celebrated.
"This is not just a place to live," she said. "This is a place to grow and have fun and feel safe."
For Jade, Tony, and their family, that's exactly what it's become.
