Group of laughing seniors on vacation together

Remember when you were in high school? It seemed so incredibly easy to make friends in those days. Dozens of them, in fact. And there was always room for more

It probably was simpler then, when your school days were spent interacting with dozens of interesting individuals your age. At least a few of your classmates were always ready to chat in the hallways between classes or plan after-school fun.

For many, making friends in retirement can feel more difficult than it once was. Yet, maintaining meaningful connections becomes increasingly vital as we age. In fact, companionship often plays a more significant role later in life. The U.S. Surgeon General recently shared this with a powerful statement: “Loneliness is just as detrimental to health as smoking.” This striking comparison highlights the importance of emotional well-being and social connection for older adults.

A Place Where Friendships Flourish

For Deupree House residents Mick and Marilee Sand, the decision to move wasn’t just about being closer to their children—it was also about finding connection and community in retirement. “If I were back in my home, I wouldn’t be as engaged with friends and interests as I am at Deupree House,” Mick shared.

That sense of belonging is at the heart of a continuing care retirement community (CCRC). Neighbors quickly become friends, and each resident brings their own stories, experiences, and interests. It’s often these shared passions—whether it’s tennis, book clubs, or a love of cooking—that spark meaningful relationships. CCRCs foster an atmosphere of camaraderie and inclusion, helping older adults overcome the isolation that can come with living alone.

In fact, a 2025 study by the Mather Institute found that seniors living in CCRCs report higher levels of physical, emotional, intellectual, and social wellness compared to those living at home. They’re also more likely to have a positive outlook on aging, enjoy regular social interaction, and feel less lonely overall.

Friendship at Every Stage of Life

Friendship forms the foundation for a vibrant, connected life, especially in our later years. Older adults with a strong network of friends tend to have better social well-being and are more likely to enjoy their retirement years fully.

Some of the most enriching friendships can come from unexpected places—particularly with people of different ages or cultural backgrounds. These kinds of relationships offer fresh perspectives and intellectual stimulation, sparked by the differences that make each of us unique.

Of course, reaching across generations can feel intimidating. But chances are, you’ve already had a cross-generational connection without even realizing it—perhaps with a younger adult at church, your hairstylist, a dining room server, or even a friendly couple at the next table in a coffee shop.

In those brief moments, a genuine bond may have already formed. And sometimes, there’s a chance to deepen that connection. The instinct might be to hold back—to think, “No, that’s not for me.” But before you say no, consider saying yes.

It could be the start of a beautiful, life-affirming friendship.
