What is it like living in an independent living community dedicated to helping each resident find their own way of living purposefully? At Deupree House, there are many stories of older adults achieving a higher quality of life within our senior living community.
Beyond a doubt, purposeful living is about finding your own way to make every day count. So let’s take a closer look at what a day in the life of some of our residents is like.
Meet Dean Colville & Marv Collins
Dean Colville and Marv Collins enjoy retirement with new activities and old favorites. That may mean spending time playing the chapel organ, something Marv has enjoyed since college. Dean spends some afternoons in the fitness center, using the treadmill and weights.
They often welcome neighbors to their home for wine and snacks — like Marv’s pimento cheese recipe — before dinner in Grille 39 or the dining room.
Deupree offers many amenities, including a walking path that winds its way through the community. Its thoughtful design inspires interaction with nature, bird feeders, patios, and a gazebo – encouraging residents to chat with neighbors.
Deupree House transportation takes residents where they like to go, allowing them to experience the community’s rich cultural assets. Beyond the Deupree House campus options, they also appreciate performances by gifted artists at the Matinée Musicale Cincinnati in Memorial Hall. Afterward, they’re creating new memories with friends at Montgomery Inn’s The Boathouse.
They rave about caring team members who work at Deupree House, including one who helped find stored-away music books, and the team at the reception desk that is always so friendly.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dean and others helped care for the beautiful gardens and flowers on the property, maintaining them when the professional horticulturist couldn’t go inside to tend the plants. Marv and Dean had enjoyed a large garden at their Anderson Township home before they retired.
Dean and Marv also have many good things to say about their friendly and bright neighbors, who offer fun conversations and insights.
What Do Other Residents Do?
Independent living lets people do things they find fulfilling. They might spend time in the chapel each morning, talk with other residents over coffee, or enjoy the beautiful outdoors.
When longtime resident Nancy Schpatz isn’t busy serving as president of the Deupree House Resident Council, she loves walking, and does so often. She also plays an electric keyboard in her apartment.
Resident Michael Porte strives for purposeful living. He learned Tai Chi 40 years ago at Deupree House. He now shares his enthusiasm with other residents by teaching it to them. He’s also passionate about writing.
Help is available to residents, even as they live independently. Freedom from less enjoyable tasks – such as preparing meals and keeping up with the home – allows time for more pleasant activities. Linda Callard now has more time to meet people, entertain neighbors at cocktail parties in her garden-view apartment, solve crossword puzzles, and play bridge. Those activities help keep her mind sharp while she enjoys a high quality of life.
With purposeful living, there are no complex rules for what residents must accomplish. It’s about finding the path that makes them happy.
