OK, so maybe one more Mother’s Day brunch isn’t your thing. You’re looking for a new idea for something to do this Sunday with your senior mother or grandmother. Lucky you! There’s plenty to do with a senior living in Cincinnati.
Let’s take a look at a few of the attractions and events you could visit this weekend for your family’s Mother’s Day celebration.
What’s more Mother’s Day than a bunch of flowers?
No, we don’t mean your standard arrangement of roses, carnations,or daisies. We don’t even mean a potted geranium. We’re talking about a conservatory full of blooms, exotic plants trees and butterflies.
This spring, the Cincinnati Parks Commission’s Krohn Conservatory, atop Mt. Adams in Eden Park, will host its annual live butterfly expo. This year, the Conservatory features Butterflies of the Caribbean.
Take a stroll through Krohn’s verdant junglescapes. Butterflies native to the Caribbean region will be flying and flitting about. A few may even land on you! It’s an up-close-and-personal experience with raw natural beauty that you and your mother or grandmother won’t soon forget.
Also this weekend, the Conservatory will host an outdoor artisans’ market, “Palengke: A Filipino Street Market,” at which a bevy of artists and vendors will be selling earth-friendly products. Best of all? Admission to the Krohn Conservatory is half-price for all mothers from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. this Sunday.
Speaking of flowers . . .
The Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden is offering free admission to all mothers this Sunday. Take your mom or grandmother for a gentle stroll to view the Zoo’s extensive beds of exotic, rare and endangered flower and tree species.
Stop by the red panda enclosure, see the Manatee Springs aquatic exhibit (where you can see threatened Florida manatees that have been rescued and rehabilitated from injury, prior to their release back into the wild) and visit the Zoo’s world famous white Bengal tigers.
Best of all? The annual Zoo Babies event is in full swing. Stop by the nursery and see the new litter of cheetah cubs and a host of other cute, fuzzy baby critters. Your mom’s heart will melt with all the fuzzy cuteness on display, and you’ll have plenty to talk about on the way home.
Take Mom on a sea voyage.
No, not really. But you can do the next best thing — take her to the Newport Aquarium for its Mother’s Day Breakfast and Brunch.
Wait, I thought this article wasn’t going to be about more brunches. Correct. It’s not. In this case, brunch just happens to be part of the deal.
The Aquarium’s brunch admission price includes admission to the viewing areas, too, so you can take your senior mom or grandmother in to visit with the penguins, to see the new seahorse exhibit, through the river habitat and under the waves in the walk-through Shark Tunnel, where you can see rare shark rays!
There will also be a children’s craft area, so make sure you bring the little ones with you. And your mom will surely get a kick out of watching the kiddos experiencing the tide pool, where they can pet dogfish, urchins and starfish.
Take Mom on a river voyage.
OK, this one actually involves going out on the water. In this case, it involves cruising on the Ohio River. BB Riverboats will host a Mother’s Day cruise this Sunday.
The cruise will board at noon at the BB Riverboats terminal. The fare includes brunch (it just keeps cropping up, doesn’t it?). It also includes a souvenir photo of you and your special older loved one.
There will also reportedly be a second, dinnertime cruise on Mother’s Day, so check with BB riverboats and reserve your preferred space!
Wine, anyone?
The Henke Winery will also host a Mother’s Day event. Take your mom or grandmother out for a day at the vineyard. Sample all Henke’s fine wines and enjoy a relaxing lunch.
A little vino and a lot of conversation will help and your loved one to create memories that will last long past this Mother’s Day.
