When most people think about moving into a retirement community, they often imagine it as a place to slow down and “settle in.” With the convenience of maintenance-free living, one might wonder how they will spend all their time that used to be dedicated to yard care, cooking, cleaning, etc.  But residents at Deupree House are often surprised about two things:  time and energy.  Residents share that they have more free time now that household chores are someone else’s responsibility as well as more energy to dedicate to their interests.

Deupree House resident Virginia Cox revealed that since moving in, she has discovered it’s not about age—it’s about growing.  Virginia shared, “Deupree House is a place where residents don’t age; they grow.” This unique perspective is what makes Deupree House stand out among retirement communities.  It’s a place where seniors can enjoy maintenance-free living while actively engaging in learning and various life enriching activities.  Residents find they have more time and resources to pursue their passions, discover new interests, and live life to the fullest.

The Benefits of Maintenance-Free Living

One of the most significant advantages of moving into a retirement community like Deupree House is the freedom from the burdens of home maintenance.  Gone are the days of worrying about yard work, home repairs, and other household chores.  This newfound freedom allows residents to focus on what truly matters to them.

Many of the Deupree House residents recall when a local publication interviewed a former resident at Deupree House. The resident stated that there was a moment when he knew that it was time to move into Deupree House.  “I looked out my kitchen window and realized I had 8 hours of yard work but only 2 hours of energy.”  This sentiment rings true to many.  “I wish I had a dime for every time a new resident of Deupree House has shared that they wished that they had moved sooner!” says Emerson Stambaugh, Executive Director of Hospitality, after 20+ years of working for the organization. “Maintenance-free living allows our residents to relax and enjoy their time here without the stress of managing a home.  It really opens up so many possibilities for personal growth and enjoyment.”

Virginia was thrilled when a maintenance team member offered to fix her vacuum.  “If I was still in my own home, I would have had to find a repair person, drive to drop it off, pay for the repair, and drive to pick it up,” she relayed.  At Deupree, although the maintenance staff primarily work on the building, they are more than willing to help the residents.  “The team members put the residents first.”

A Hub for Learning Opportunities

At Deupree House, learning doesn’t stop with age.  In fact, many residents find that they have more time and energy to devote to intellectual pursuits.  The community offers a variety of educational programs and lectures that cater to a wide range of interests.

One popular offering is the historian lecture series, which features talks from renowned historians on various topics.  These lectures allow residents to expand their knowledge and engage in stimulating discussions.  For those who love history, these talks highlight the community’s offerings.  “It is wonderful.  We all look forward to the lectures.  They make you feel that you are conversing in the living room.”

Additionally, Deupree House organizes trips to the symphony, opera, and other musical programs – even providing transportation including in the evening and weekends.  These outings not only provide cultural enrichment but also offer social opportunities for residents to connect with one another.  The life enrichment team also brings in top notch performers such as Playhouse and Shakespeare’s Theater.  Whether it’s a night at the opera or an afternoon at the symphony, these events add a touch of elegance and excitement to residents’ lives.

Beverly Edwards, Vice President of Residential Healthcare, notes, “Our educational programs and cultural outings are designed to keep our residents intellectually engaged and socially connected.  We believe that learning is a lifelong process, and we strive to provide opportunities for our residents to continue growing and exploring new interests.”

Engaging Activities for All Interests

Beyond learning, Deupree House offers a wide array of activities to suit the diverse interests of its residents.  From fitness classes to art workshops, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

The community offers a variety of fitness classes, including yoga, tai chi, and water aerobics, for those who enjoy staying active.  These classes are tailored to meet the needs of seniors, ensuring that everyone can participate and benefit from regular physical activity.

Art enthusiasts can take advantage of the many creative workshops offered at Deupree House.  Whether painting or knitting, residents can explore their artistic side and create beautiful works of art.  These workshops provide a creative outlet and foster a sense of accomplishment and pride.  Recently, Cincinnati’s own Charley Harper’s son came to Deupree to share insight into his father’s famous works.  The staff also arranged to have Charley Harper’s artwork in the rotating gallery in the dining room to correspond with the lecture.

Social activities are also a key part of life at Deupree House.  From game nights to book clubs, there are plenty of opportunities for residents to connect and build lasting friendships.  These social interactions are crucial for maintaining mental and emotional well-being and add vibrant energy to the community.

Virginia recalls that when she first moved in, another resident commented to her that people should move to Deupree while they're active enough to enjoy it.  “Since then, I'm more aware of how many people wait until they need too much care and can't participate in social activities.  I am happy to say I am here enjoying all that Deupree offers!”

Edwards shares, “Our goal is to create a dynamic and engaging environment where residents can pursue their passions and discover new hobbies.  We want everyone to feel a sense of belonging and excitement about their daily lives.”

A Community of Growth

The philosophy at Deupree House is centered around the idea that life doesn’t have to slow down with age. Instead, it can be a time of growth, exploration, and fulfillment.  This mindset is evident in every community aspect, from the wide range of activities and programs to the supportive and nurturing environment.

Virginia Cox’s words resonate deeply with the residents and staff alike.  “Deupree House is a place where residents don’t age; they grow.” This sentiment is not just a tagline—it’s a way of life.  It’s about seizing opportunities, staying curious, and continually seeking new experiences.

The community’s commitment to fostering growth is evident in the dedicated staff members who work tirelessly to create a vibrant and enriching environment.  Their passion and enthusiasm are contagious, inspiring residents to make the most of their time at Deupree House.
