Wednesday, Jan. 4

12:15 p.m.

Art class. Join our volunteer, Jaime Frechette, as she offers instruction in the art of copper enameling.

3 p.m.

Presentation. Officers from the Cincinnati Police Department will be here to share their knowledge about how to prevent being a victim of fraud or scams. There are many computer and phone scams out there, so learn how to protect yourself and what steps to take if you feel you may have been a victim of fraud.

1 p.m.

Writing group. The “Writing Our Memoirs” group meets today in the Lee Library.

Friday, Jan. 6

3 p.m.

Residents’ meeting. Our monthly gathering will be held today in the Event Center. This meeting is designed to keep residents up to date on the latest happenings at Marjorie P. Lee.

Saturday, Jan. 7

7 p.m.

Movie night. Join us in the Event Center for Saturday Cinema! Tonight, we’ll watch director Hannes Holm’s comedy, A Man Called Ove, starring Rolf Lassgård, Bahar Pars and Filip Berg. Ove is the quintessential angry old man next door. He spends his days enforcing neighborhood association rules and visiting his wife's grave. When the boisterous young family next door accidentally flattens his mailbox, an unlikely friendship forms and we come to understand Ove's past happiness and heartbreaks.

Sunday, Jan. 8

3:30 p.m.

Concert. Pianist Bob Pollack will be here to play your favorite tunes, interspersed with fun facts about the composers, musicians and singers that made the songs famous.

7 p.m.

Documentary viewing. Tonight in the Event Center, we’ll watch March of the Penguins. At the end of each Antarctic summer, the emperor penguins of the South Pole journey to their traditional breeding grounds in a fascinating mating ritual captured by intrepid filmmaker Luc Jacquet.

Monday, Jan. 9

10:30 p.m.

Crafts class. Instructor Kathy Hargis will help residents create beautiful handmade cards today in the Craft Room.

5 p.m.

Group dinner outing. Tonight, we’ll dine at Alfio’s Buon Cibo, located on Hyde Park Square. Remember to sign up beforehand in the transportation book in the lobby if you plan to attend!

Wednesday, Jan. 11

1 p.m.

Group outing. Today, we’ll tour Holy Trinity-St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, located in Finneytown, thought to be the oldest Orthodox parish in Ohio.

7 p.m.

Slide presentation. This evening in the Event Center, historian Diane Shields will present a slide show lecture on “The History of American Inaugurations.”

Thursday, Jan. 12

3 p.m.

Happy hour and concert. Come meet your Marjorie P. Lee neighbors and chase away the winter blues with light hors d’oeuvres, drinks and music by renowned Cincinnati jazz pianist Phil DeGreg and clarinetist Joe Lukasik!

Saturday, Jan. 14

7 p.m.

Movie night. Join us in the Event Center as Saturday Cinema continues! Tonight, we’ll watch Clint Eastwood’s dramatic 2016 biopic Sully, starring Tom Hanks, Aaron Eckhart and Laura Linney. After making a near-miraculous emergency landing in New York's Hudson River, Capt. Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger becomes a national hero. Despite the accolades, the famed pilot faces an investigation that threatens to destroy his career and reputation.

3:30 p.m.

Concert. This afternoon, a Suzuki string group from the Cincinnati Music Academy will perform a variety of songs for us in the Chapel.

7 p.m.

Documentary viewing. Tonight in the Event Center, we’ll watch Ben Franklin: Inventor, Diplomat, Icon…and a Human Being. In this presentation from The History Channel, the real Ben Franklin — including his many triumphs and his many personal foibles — is revealed.

Monday, Jan. 16

7 p.m.

Performance. Friends of the Groom Theater Company will perform From the Ridiculous to the Sublime — a series of short, uplifting skits — in the Event Center this evening.

Wednesday, Jan. 18

10 a.m.

Group outing. Today we’ll tour the new Servatii factory in Tri-County. This state-of-the-art automated facility produces the company’s pretzel bread and rolls. This is a working factory tour; participants will need to walk for a distance and must wear closed-toe shoes.

7 p.m.

Music recital. Cellist Angela Bolen will play “Ballet Favorites” this evening in the Chapel.

Thursday, Jan. 19

7 p.m.

Burns Day celebration. Tonight, we’ll celebrate the life of 18th Century poet Robert Burns. Every January, his birth is remembered in Scotland, where he is considered the “national poet” and a founding father of Scottish literature.

Friday, Jan. 20

Noon*

Pizza party. Today, we’ll host a pizza party in the Event Center. Come meet your neighbors and enjoy a variety of pizzas, salad, beverages and dessert.

Movie night. Join us in the Event Center for more Saturday Cinema! Tonight, we’ll watch 1967 war adventure The Dirty Dozen, starring Lee Marvin, Ernest Borgnine and a “cast of thousands.” In the waning days of World War II, on the dim promise of receiving pardons if they survive, a ragtag group of US military prisoners undergo a brutal training program, then infiltrate enemy lines to eliminate a group of high value German targets headquartered in a French chateau.

Documentary viewing. Tonight in the Event Center, we’ll watch The Von Trapp Family: A Life of Music.

Based on an autobiography by Agathe von Trapp, this film follows the von Trapps’ incredible journey from the perspective of the family’s eldest daughter.

Literary salon. Our book discussion group meets today in the Lee Library to discuss The Lake House, by Kate Morton. Copies of the book are available at the Shaw Lobby reception desk, if you’re interested in joining the group.

7 p.m.

Presentation. Tonight in the Event Center, a speaker from the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Gardens will tell us about the history of the zoo.

Group dinner outing. Let’s celebrate Chinese New Year a little early! We’ll depart for dinner at the Oriental Wok, located in the Regency. Click here to peruse the menu. If you plan to attend, remember to sign up for transportation — the book is located in the Victoria Lobby.

Music recital. Tonight, a student artist from the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) will give a recital in the Chapel.  This program offers current music students the opportunity to enhance their performance skills, while providing us with an evening of beautiful entertainment.

Saturday, Jan. 28

7 p.m.

Movie night. Join us in the Event Center for our final Saturday Cinema event in January. Tonight, we’ll watch the classic 1980 comedy 9 to 5, starring Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin. Come meet your Marjorie P. Lee neighbors and sing along!

7 p.m.

Documentary viewing. Tonight in the Event Center, we’ll watch In Search of Mozart, the first feature-length documentary on the famous Austrian composer's life. Produced in collaboration with the world's leading orchestras and musicians, it takes the viewer on a 25,000-mile-long journey along every route Mozart followed, tracing his life through his music and extensive correspondence. Over 80 of Mozart’s works are featured in chronological order, revealing striking parallels between the music and the composer’s experiences.
