At ERH, we know that so many of our residents spoke with their families as they were making the decision to move into a senior living community. But for every older adult that chooses to move into a retirement community in Cincinnati, there’s another who chooses to remain at home.
And as those seniors get older, their health and safety at home can become a very real concern for their families.
But there’s good news. Geriatric care management and other senior living services can help ensure that older adults who live at home are safe and well cared for.

In the last year, our care management team has worked with an increasing number of seniors to improve their quality of life and help them continue to do the things they love:
- Preventing at least 10 hospitalizations because of early intervention and follow-up. This often means doing mini-assessments when care managers notice a client isn’t feeling well and contacting the doctor before a condition escalates.
- Correcting potential safety issues and prevent countless falls.
- Helping clients keep up the lifestyle they’re used to—going on trips and attending events.
- Providing rides for doctor’s appointments, grocery shopping and other errands.
- Helping clients and their families through the complicated process of selling a house.
- Ensuring that spouses and families are together for holidays and family events.
- Assisting with technology like emergency response devices, medication dispensing systems, and easier to manage phones, so that clients could stay safely in their homes.
Look into Aging in Place Renovations
If you’re worried that your loved one is living in a home that hasn’t been optimized for their safety, talking to an experienced builder who has experience in aging in place renovations can be a great place to start finding peace of mind.
A Certified Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS) can answer any questions you may have about what kind of features your loved one’s home may need to continue being safe and accessible long into the future. The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) can help you find a certified contractor near you, but don’t be pushed into any unnecessary renovations.
- Low maintenance landscaping and exteriors means that you don’t have to worry about being able to touch up chipped paint or weed the garden, but if you already have a service that maintains your grounds, it might not be something you need to include in your plans.
- If you have a 2 story house, you probably should consider the how accessible necessities like your kitchen, bath, and bedroom will be in the future. However, you may not need to transition all of the necessities to the first floor, if a chair lift is a viable option.
Have a conversation with your loved one and their senior healthcare provider about the kind of assistive or support devices you may need in the future, then talk with a trusted financial advisor to plan out a renovation budget that covers the changes necessary to keep your loved one safe and living well.
