Happy New Year, Cincinnati seniors! My, oh my, where did 2017 go?

2018 is off to a great start here at Deupree House, with plenty of outings, activities and entertainments in store for our residents. Here's everything that's going on in January at our cozy, welcoming retirement community in Hyde Park:

January Events

Monday, Jan. 1

Happy New Year, Deupree House!

Please note: Transportation Services and the Dining Room are closed today, as our staff members spend the holiday with their families.

Tuesday, Jan. 2

3 p.m.

Trivia Tuesday. Gather your Deupree House neighbors and smartest friends and meet us in the Conference Room. We play for prizes, bragging rights and laughs every first and third Tuesday afternoon!

7:30 p.m.

Concert. Tonight in the Event Center, join us as we listen the jazz combo, The Faux Frenchmen, who play a re-Americanized take on "gypsy jazz," first popularized in 1930s France by Django Reinhardt.

Wednesday, Jan. 3

7: 30 p.m.

Movie night. "That's my life, I don't apologize for that. But I always thought that when it was your time, that you would be the one to hold the strings." Tonight's mid-week film feature is The Godfather, starring Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, Diane Keaton and Robert Duvall.

Thursday, Jan. 4

1 p.m.

Card games. Come play duplicate bridge with us on Thursday afternoons in the Club Room.

Friday, Jan. 5

8:30 a.m.

Group outing. We're taking a day trip up I-71 today to the Columbus Museum of Art, where we'll view its special Beyond Impressionism exhibit, featuring work by Paul Signac, Maximilien Luce, Maurice Denis, Pierre Bonnard, Félix Vallotton, Odilon Redon, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and other notables of the late 19th Century French avant garde.

Saturday, Jan. 6

7:15 p.m.

Group outing. Tonight, we'll attend the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra's performance, Bach + Beethoven and the CSO's History, guest-conducted by Sir Andrew Davis.

7:30 p.m.

Movie night. It’s Saturday Cinema night! Come down to the Event Center for our first movie of the month, director Barry Levinson's classic 1988 drama Rain Man, starring Dustin Hoffman, Tom Cruise and Valeria Golino.

Sunday, Jan. 7

1 p.m.

Worship service. Join us in the Chapel. We meet every Sunday afternoon to worship.

4 p.m.

Computer assistance. Need help figuring out how to operate your new computer, tablet, smart TV, e-reader, or mobile device? Having software issues or outage problems? Do you suspect adware or a virus might be slowing your computer down? No worries! Our volunteer information technician, Ronaldo, can help you (by appointment) every Sunday afternoon between noon and 4 p.m. Check the schedule for available slots.

Monday, Jan. 8

10:30 a.m.

Bible study. Our Bible study group meets every Monday morning at this time in the Private Dining Room.

Tuesday, Jan. 9

1 p.m.

Literary salon. Our resident-led book club will meet this afternoon in the Conference Room.

Wednesday, Jan. 10

9:30 a.m.

Seamstress visit. Need something mended, altered, or hemmed? Our volunteer seamstress will be in the Art Studio for an hour this morning, to assist you.

2 p.m.

Caregiver support group. Our presentation today is "Managing Caregiver Stress," an excerpt from our six-week Powerful Tools for Caregivers class. All caregivers from the community, as well as Deupree House residents and their family members, are welcome at our monthly support group meeting.

7:30 p.m.

Bingo night. It’s time again for everyone’s favorite game! Feeling lucky? Join us in the Event Center every second and fourth Wednesday evening for bingo, prizes and good times with your Deupree House neighbors.

Friday, Jan. 12

4:30 p.m.

Art show opening. Join us this afternoon in the Dining Room for the opening of former Dining Services server Erica Griffin's gallery show.

Saturday, Jan. 13

9:30 a.m.

Group outing. This morning, we’ll shop at Findlay Market, Cincinnati’s famous open-air grocery and foodie destination.

7:15 p.m.

Group outing. Tonight, we'll listen to the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra play Mozart + Mahler, featuring violinist Jennifer Frautschi.

7:30 p.m.

Movie night. Our second Saturday Cinema event of the month will take place in the Event Center. Tonight, we’re watching the 1964 musical My Fair Lady, starring Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison.

Sunday, Jan. 14

3:15 p.m.

Group outing. This afternoon, we'll bus over to the Linton Chamber Music Series performance Traveling Through Time, featuring pianist Soyeon Kate Lee and Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra principal musicians Randolph Bowman, Gillian Benet Sella and Ilya Finkelshteyn.

Monday, Jan. 15

2:30 p.m.

Art class. Come down to the Art Studio and learn how to make beautiful objet d'art! No experience necessary; all are welcome.

Tuesday, Jan. 16

3 p.m.

Trivia game. It's the third Tuesday of the month, and that means we're playing trivia this afternoon in the Conference Room. Grab your smarty-pantsiest friends and come on down!

Wednesday, Jan. 17

7:30 p.m.

Movie night. Our special mid-week film screening this evening will be The Devil Wears Prada, starring Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway.

Thursday, Jan. 18

5 p.m.

Cocktail party. Come down to the Club Room, meet and greet your Deupree House neighbors, and enjoy drinks and light refreshments.

Friday, Jan. 19

8:15 p.m.

Group outing. This evening, we'll visit the historic Cincinnati Observatory, the "Birthplace of American Astronomy." Cross your fingers for clear winter skies!

Saturday, Jan. 20

7:30 p.m.

Movie night. It’s time again for Saturday Cinema! Come down to the Event Center and watch this week’s film, the 2002 drama The Pianist, starring Adrien Brody and Emilia Fox.

Sunday, Jan. 21

1:15 p.m.

Group outing. You haven't truly heard Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture until you've heard it performed live in a concert hall by a full orchestra. This afternoon, you'll have your chance to do so, when we attend the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra matinée performance.

6 p.m.

Sip & Sup dinner. Our popular monthly fundraiser dinner returns! If you plan to attend, please remember to turn in your $7 plate fee to Life Enrichment by Tuesday, Jan. 16. Checks payable to "Sip & Sup"; cash should be placed in an envelope with your name and room number. If you have questions, please contact Nancy McOwen.

Tuesday, Jan. 23

7:30 p.m.

Lecture. Come to the Event Center this evening for a fascinating lecture, "Climbing in the Himalayas," given by Brent Bishop, son of legendary climber Barry Bishop. Brent was the first American to follow in his father's footsteps and summit Mt. Everest. His lecture will feature an exquisite collection of pictures from the world's tallest mountain range.

Wednesday, Jan. 24

1:30 p.m.

Group outing. This month, our own Gary Morgenroth will lead us on a two-part bus tour of Cincinnati's history and architecture! Today, we'll tour the Queen City's famed Over-the-Rhine neighborhood.

Friday, Jan. 26

7 p.m.

Group outing. This evening, we'll attend the Pendleton Art Center's Final Friday open house. Home to one of the world's largest collections of artists under one roof, the PAC's artists give guests the opportunity to view their studios and purchase unique artwork. This event is handicap-accessible and free of charge.

Saturday, Jan. 27

7:15 p.m.

Group outing. All aboard the bus to Music Hall! Tonight, we'll take in the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra's performance Beethoven + Bartók, featuring guest bassist Owen Lee.

7:30 p.m.

Movie night. Tonight, in the Event Center, it’s the last Saturday Cinema screening of the month! We’ll be watching director Christopher Nolan's Academy Award-contending war drama, Dunkirk, starring Fionn Whitehead and Damien Bonnard.

Sunday, Jan. 28

6 p.m.

Dinner outing. This evening, we'll dine at Phoenician Taverna, an upscale-but-casual Mediterranean restaurant in Mason, specializing in Lebanese cuisine. Phoenician Taverna's open kitchen is part of the dining room and they prepare their entire menu — from baking pita bread to stuffing sausages — in house.

Monday, Jan. 29

4 p.m.

Resident council. Our resident council meets on the last Monday afternoon of every month in the Event Center. Come join us and stay abreast of all the news and happenings here at Deupree House.

Tuesday, Jan. 30

7:30 p.m.

Concert. Tonight, in the Event Center, pianist Denny Duvall will regale us with tributes to Louis Armstrong, Johnny Cash, Elvis and many more of your favorite artists!

Wednesday, Jan. 31

Group outing. Our bus tour of Cincinnati's history and architecture, led by Gary Morgenroth, concludes today with a journey through Pendleton and Eden Park. Come join us and learn about Porkopolis's hidden architectural gems and stories.

Kristin Davenport is the Director of Communications for Episcopal Retirement Services (ERS). Kristin leads ERS’s efforts to share stories that delight and inspire through social media, online content, annual reports, magazines, newsletters, public relations, and events. Kristin earned her BFA in graphic design from Wittenberg University. She joined ERS in 2014 after a 25-year career as a visual journalist and creative director with American City Business Journals. Her role at ERS has ignited her passion for making Cincinnati a dementia-inclusive city, and she spends time with residents as a SAIDO® Learning lead supporter. Kristin is the executive producer and co-host of the Linkage Podcast for ERS. Kristin and her husband Alex live in Lebanon, Ohio, with their two daughters. She also serves as a Trustee and the President of the Lebanon Food Pantry and is a board member for ArtScape Lebanon, where she teaches painting and has an art studio, Indium Art.
